Portable Appliance Testing (PAT)
Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) is an important part of a company's or individual's responsibility to health and safety. This is carried out with a visual inspection and then a series of specialised testing procedures on your portable appliances.
A portable appliance is any type of equipment powered by electricity. These include appliances that can be readily moved or hand-held such as a toaster or hairdryers, movable equipment such as an air conditioning unit or electric fire; fixed and built in appliances such as electric cookers or bathroom heaters; IT equipment and extension leads.
The responsibility for safety applies equally to small firms (including the self-employed) as well as to larger organisations. In addition to being responsible for the safety of their own portable appliances they are also responsible for those brought onto site by employees or contractors. Landlords are responsible for any electrical equipment they provide.
Periodic Inspections
Periodic Inspections involve the testing of electrical services and systems that conduct electricity around a building. It covers all of the hard wiring in a building and includes items such as main panels, distribution boards, lighting, socket outlets, air conditioning and other fixed plant. It involves performing a sequence of rigorous visual inspections and electrical tests on all systems in the building.
Employers are responsible for ensuring the health and safety of both their employees and members of the public onsite and to ensure that they are not at risk from their work activities. Regulation 3 of the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 recognises a responsibility that employers and many employees have for electrical systems.
On completion of any Periodic Inspection and Test programme the client will be provided with a full and detailed Periodic Inspection Report.
