Safety is more than a game of chance.
Fenton UK has just celebrated 10 years of ZERO accidents but will it be able to celebrate 11 years? We caught up with Kevin Bonanno, General Manager at Fenton UK to find out.
He's quite rightly proud of their fantastic record but admits that this is only one shift, one slip, and one trip from being lost. So how does any organisation with a good health and safety record maintain it? Fenton UK believes that their success is directly attributed to their development and implementation of a health and safety culture. Kevin explained how important it is to ensure that everyone has a healthy respect for the inherent risks involved in working within the rail environment and how it can't be left to the Site Supervisors to know about good practices.
Kevin's advice is to "listen to your engineers" explaining that they're best placed to highlight opportunities for improvements. He added that "When you've trained, educated and informed you still have to get the job done. Safety cannot stay in the classroom and risks don't stop at the latest revision of a manual."
With the growing number of refurbishment and modernisation projects, the rail environment is often more like a construction site than a railway so ensuring that their staff are aware of the associated dangers is vital to Kevin. This dedication towards maintaining those high standards means they were recently awarded the Gold Standard Certificate of Commitment from the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS).
Without crossing any fingers and with their fate firmly in their own hands, Fenton UK are looking forward to the year ahead and to proudly proclaiming 11 years of ZERO accidents.
